July 13th Bonus Blog: Onward – 2020: Director – Dan Scanlon and starring  Tom Holland, Chris Pratt, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, and Octavia Spencer. Produced by Pixar and Disney

Simple Overview:  Onward is an RPG with more heart than ever before. This Pixar film reminds us to look at people in a better light and find a way for them to shine. Barley and Ian venture out on a quest to complete a spell so they can spend time with their father and along the way rekindle the forgotten magic that lives within the residents of New Mushroomton. Expect to see a cool van, biker game, a manticore, and an array of mayhem that creates an adventure with heart.

What Could Have Been Better:
I’m not going to lie this one is hard to dish out opportunities on as it gave me so many warm feels. As usual creativity inc(Pixar) has dropped a film based around their formula or awe, inspire warm feels, and a solid soundtrack this feels like a recycled method that could be adjusted.

What I loved: Barleys Van, Ian’s growth, the Manticore’s freedom, and the Mother’s realization of her ability and skills. This film was fun, plenty of great one-liners, the RPG references alongside the fairytale creatures. This film flowed very naturally and was relatable on many levels we all could see a character in this film and either relate to them or know someone who would relate to a storyline in this film and that made it fun. Ian’s realization of everything his brother did for him was a warm fuzzy I needed last night when I watched this film.

Final Thoughts:  This film deserves some attention and 102 minutes is just the right amount of time to give the film. Be ready for some nerdy fun and a little emotional pull that will help you to relate to the film. Don’t worry if you don’t understand the nerdy RPG jargon, just watch the film and seek to understand the bigger meaning.  Watch Onward and have fun with a fun movie, with a great message and quality graphics!

Rating: 4 of 5 thumbs.
