The Secret Life Of Walter Mitty And Learning To Step Out Of Your Comfort Zone

Film: The Secret Life Of Walter Mitty

Directed By: Ben Stiller

Starring: Ben Stiller, Kristen Wig, Adam Scott, Sean Penn, Kathryn Hahn, Adrian Martinez, Shirley MacLaine, and Marcus Antturi.

Key Details:
Walter is a negative asset manager at Life Magazine who has spent his professional career as a gatekeeper for some of the most iconic imagery published in Life Magazine. He arrives to work and finds the company has been acquired and his quest to provide the photo for the final print issue of the magazine begins as he seeks out renowned adventurer and photographer Sean O’Connell.

Walter discovers the strength he never knew he had at each leg of the journey as he slowly befriends Cheryl an office crush, takes a spontaneous trip to Greenland then to Iceland and beyond. Walter learns as he goes and steps out of his comfort zone and embraces the struggles of type 2 fun as he traverses the globe. He clashes with himself and the managing director of the acquisition, Ted Hendricks. We see Walter change as he ventures out into the world spending less time daydreaming and more time living.

The Secret Life Of Walter Mitty is a well thought out mix of sound and visual quality. The sets are designed to help you feel the emotion and see the changes happening around Walter throughout the film. Everything is combined with a great soundtrack that will make you want to hop out of your chair and venture out from your comfort zone a step out two into the unknown.

The cast work well together as Stiller and Wig play great as New Yorkers just looking to live quality lives as they go. Sean Penn stands out as the rugged adventurer and inspiration for Walter and the rest of us in this film. The supporting cast plays their part in making this film a quality adventure you need to see at least once.

Summary in a Tweet:
Man chases photo negative through various countries while a slick soundtrack plays in the background and the scenery leads the man back to his family and friends where he finds what he has been searching for all along, himself.

Have I watched this before?:
Yes, I watched it in the theater in early 2014 and the film was probably the most inspiring film I watched all year. It spurred various adventures and an attitude to live life to the fullest.

What Could Have Been Better:
I just wanted more. I wanted more of the adventure, more of the growth, and just more. This film was great, but I can’t put my thumb on what more it needs, just something more.

What I loved: The beginning of this film starts as a look into the reality of a man tired and overwhelmed with day to day life and how he is coping with what is happening around him. I think its beautifully portrayed by stiller and captured with the cameras. Walter’s growth throughout the film is beautifully shown through the choices he makes from the red car or a blue one to jumping from a helicopter to longboarding through Iceland, and finally standing up to his boss after a long series of decisions that helped him stand up for himself.

The Secret Life of Walter Mitty is a film that can help you look inward at what’s holding you back and assist you in taking steps towards living a life that you imagined, one decision at a time. It’s a beautiful look into growing up, balancing family, making the tough decisions, and finding what you want out of life. Worth a watch in my book at least once a year.
