My Rating:4/5 I love Solo and think we need a follow up to the film like they left a few opportunities for a follow-up when is that coming?
Summary in a Tweet: Young man looks to make a name for himself to impress his childhood crush. Teams up with an extremely hairy colleague and a few others with questionable motives to wow his crush.
Have I watched this before?: Yes, this would be number 6. Yes, I know that is a few times but who doesn’t love Han Solo, Chewy, or the Millennium Falcon?
What Could Have Been Better: Some weak CGI at moments that could be better. A bit deeper of a story would have been welcome here. It was a fresh origin story and those usually have hiccups.
What I loved: I’m a fan of Han Solo and I felt Alden Ehrenreich brought his flair to a character many have enjoyed over the years. Can we say it is rad to have peak Emilia Clarke, the mother of dragons in this film? She was a badass!
The world-building and the dark origin of Han and Qi’ra were just right for the start of a good story. Being able to meet and see the life of a younger Lando was great with Donald Glover showing up and delivering a smooth performance. Seeing where Chewbacca and Han became partners and friends shows us why their bond was deeper than simply workplace associates. They were truly the best duo on the screen.
I enjoyed the various factions that are all under the empire in one way or another. We are introduced to Beckett and his gang of thieves, Crimson Dawn, and their dark middleman servitude to the empire and finally, we meet Enfys Nest and her Cloud-Riders. Who knew that under a totalitarian regime there could be so many factions! I made for a fun look into the Star Wars Universe and where things can go next.
Final Thoughts: Solo: A Star Wars Story was the film we got and it was a step in the right direction despite its many holes. Yet origin films often leave just enough holes to get their audience interested. I’d say this film has enough humor, adventure, and world-building to set us off on the next phase of the Solo story.
